May 5th, 2014: Giant Statue of Cowboy-Miner

If you’re driving into Homestead (which, why?), it’s impossible to miss the assortment of weird thingies decorating the expanse of the desert. Some of them are in forms unrecognizable today, but during the 1950s, roadside tourism was actually an active business here. What still remains usually is a sign or two, pointing towards an attraction that may or may not be there

I heard once from Mr. Redgrave that we basically had to like (rephrased by me) shake a kibble bowl at tourists to get them to come here. We have a barn cat like that

But basically what happened was that people were taking roadtrips a lot in the 1950s and 60s and that’s when we got our motel and diner because someone saw a chance for profit there yeahhh small business owners !!! Slay!!

I like the gas station owner hes nice and he always gives my kids extra treats EVEN WHEN I TELL HIM TJEY CANT HAVE THEM. He's getting older now and he saw the golden age of roadtrip tourism so I asked him about it and from what I can tell, roadside attractions were, like, the dank memes of the 1960s (SEE? I'm a cool mom! I dont just stare at horses and nothing else all day!). And it did work out for a while! Because a lot of people did drive through here and giving them a stop meant they’d spend money. That's why he can still make money today he says. Though he only has one employee, and I grew up with her my whole life, becuase we are all super tight knit here. I love my little community and the businesses we have here <3 We are like the only stop for 90 minutes or so in either direction because we are in the literal middle of nowhere and the gas station gets the most business because of that even if its not a ton

Maybe i could do a feature on the local businesses.. but I don't want to post too much about them online without their permission and i still dont want everyone to know about this just yet. Maybe its silly but i dont want to be made fun of!

We got more people to actually keep driving down this road with little projects like…

The biggest project undertaken by someone from the town (more like a collaboration at this point) was the big concrete-cowboy-miner that overlooks the highway shortly after you take the exit leading onto it. No one knows really if it was built like a cowboy or a miner first, but either way its here and its big O_O

He’s just standing there… Menacingly…

Speaking of impossible to miss, he’s located nearby one of the Founder’s Rocks, of which there’s many I am told and many I have seen, in many many different shapes and sizes. They're one of our coolest local traditions. Didn’t manage to get a picture while driving but that will definitely be a feature on this blog another time because I want to do a local traditions feature!!! Hold me to it. They are not hard to find but it'll just be a matter of brain doing brain stuff and if I remember to post.......
