November 12th, 2014: Bottle Thingie Awesome Tradition

Now Playing: Wouldn’t It Be Nice - The Beach Boys (My mom loved this song)

Now, you may be looking at this and thinking: Yui what the fuck is this?

I don’t know what it’s called!! But this is an area of the desert that you don’t need a historian for. Plus, what do you need some old white guy for anyways? To tell you what’s what? Pssshhh, nah. I like my Fox Bite Rock way better, anyways.

This doesn’t need a name to be special. It’s located in a basin, near the first wash out of town. You can follow the wash to where it gets rockier then just go to uhhh where you could probably shelter from a storm. There’s a bit overhang not pictured in the image that shields the bottle thing from storms, plus all those hung up bottles and caps and tabs have been secured by generations of farmers and miners and the most resilient people I know. Soooo its kind of badass, not to brag or anything

There’s this tradition between couples in homestead. I’m back and forth on saying where I’m from but since no one seems to be reading this it’s probably fine. Anyways, there’s a tradition for couples after their first date to come here and share a drink, and then share a kisssss, and then hang their bottle loot (whatever you call it) on the metal pole that someone stuck into the ground. My mom and dad showed me where they hung their bottle caps when they were younger. Both my mom and dad were the second generation of their families to be at the farm. Their families came from California, and moved here during the 40s (I think, I don't want to ask my dad because I;m a grown adult woman and should know this). Their families worked at the same locally owned farm, my dads parents were the owners, and my moms family were workers there. A lot of the original families ended up moving out after the second generation grew up, and found opportunities elsewhere, but my mom and dad’s families stayed to raise their kids to work on the ranch. My parents were total elementary school sweethearts, because they went to the school in town with the other kids instead of being home taught at the farm. They had their first date in high school, and snuck out to go hang their bottles up together. Isn’t that so adorable???
